We're so excited for one of Ruffwear's first releases of 2025 - the Hitch Hiker Carrier! This is Ruffwear's very first dog carrier, and we're very impressed.
How Do I Measure My Dog?
There are 3 important measurements for the Hitch Hiker carrier. Accurate measurements help you choose the size to try first - with the dog seated in the carrier comfortably, and their head and paws in the right place.
This carrier is designed with an integrated harness, for maximum support and comfort whilst your dog is in the backpack. An accurate girth measurement helps you choose the size to try first.
The girth measurement should be taken around the widest point of the chest, which is usually just behind the front legs.
It's also worth considering the length of the backpack, before choosing this carrier.
The Hitch Hiker Backpack's full lengths for each of the sizes are as follows:
XXSmall: 14 inches / 36cm approx.
XSmall: 16.5 inches / 42cm approx.
Small: 19 inches / 48cm approx.
Please also be sure that your dog's weight is within the weight limit for the Hitch Hiker carrier. This carrier can carry dogs 30lbs / 13kg or less. Hip belt fits waists 21-58" (53-149 cm).
Fitting
Step 1 - The backpack should be laid out on the ground, with both of the dual zippers fully opened and all straps fully loosened.
Step 2 - With the carrier fully open, have your dog lay in the carrier, with their rump at the base of the bag. They should be sat in a 'sphinx' position, with the Ruffwear logo pointing to the ceiling.
Step 3 - Zip up the dual zippers along the side.
Step 4 - Ensure your dog's legs are correctly positioned, before buckling your dog into the integrated harness.
Step 5 - With your dog secure in the bag, cinch up the adjustment straps that you loosened in Step 1, for a snug fit.
Step 6 - Grab the handle to lift the dog upright, and put the backpack on. You can also use a lower table or a chair for this step, to help you put the backpack on.
Training
Exactly the same way you would teach your dog to use the bathroom outside, using the Hitch Hiker can take some reassurance and training. Remember, especially if this is your dog's first experience with a carrier, that this is unfamiliar to them at first! However, our dogs learn quick, and with plenty of practice, your dog will soon become accustomed to the bag.
From our extensive experience of sizing, fitting and using a range of carriers and brands, we've come up with the following top tips:
- Introductions! When introducing your dog to the carrier, make sure there aren't any distractions or loud noises, especially if your pup is nervous. A negative first experience could make your dog reluctant to try again.
- Familiarity! Once introduced, keep the carrier around the dog - this allows them to investigate, and the bag will pick up any familiar smells. Please be sure to supervise during this step - we wouldn't want any investigative chewing!
- Lots of treats! Associating the carrier with yummy treats can go a long way in getting your dog accustomed to the bag.
- Verbal praise! Reassurance from their human can help a dog feel at ease when in the bag or even when simply investigating it.
If you plan to use this carrier for an event or holiday, we would recommend purchasing in advance. This allows you to train your dog to use the carrier, in time for the occasion.
Whatever you do, don't give up!
